Come together Lesson 27

Visiting an English garden (I)

Tour guide: Imagine sipping your Earl Grey tea among sweet blooming roses or relaxing in the shade on a hidden garden bench with a good book.
Visitor: Hmmmm!
Tour guide: These images are what make the English garden so special and so famous around the world.
Visitor: Since when has the concept of the English garden existed?
Tour guide: The classic English garden dates as far back as the first century A.D. when the Romans invaded Britain.
Of course it has changed over time. In the Middle Ages, the shape of the flowerbeds may have been more rectangular or square.
Currently, the fashion in English gardens is for soft, curving lines and winding paths.
Visitor: And what makes a garden an English garden?
Tour guide: Well, one of the main concepts is the variety of plants as well as the mix of beauty and functionality.
If you look around what’s the first thing that catches your eye?
Visitor: The little walkways around the garden!
Tour guide: Yes, these symmetrical gravel paths are one important element.
It is the mixture of these structured paths and the open lawn spaces.
